Our Impact in India
Odisha, India is an eastern state on the Bay of Bengal – one of India’s poorest. We launched Hatching Hope in Odisha for several reasons – including the following:
Cargill already works in India through its many businesses, which includes providing animal nutrition expertise, products and training in 16 locations across the country.
Heifer International also has teams at work in India. A recent development project in Odisha trained 20,000 people on their 12 Cornerstones.
The Cornerstones are a development framework that empowers program participants to learn the attitudes, behaviors and skills they need to improve their own lives – and transform their communities. This large-scale training laid the foundation for Hatching Hope in the community, preparing farmers to apply their training to poultry production.
Heifer International is also working with partners in Odisha to develop poultry vaccines, collaborating with the Indian government’s Animal Husbandry department, and securing start-up funding for farmer producer organizations.
We launched Hatching Hope in Odisha with an initial focus on improving nutrition and incomes for 300,000 smallholder farmer households, or about 1.65 million people. We are also teaching effective farming practices for greater poultry productivity and livable incomes. As Hatching Hope scales up in Odisha, it will also reach out to 10,000 households (55,000 individuals) to increase nutritional awareness.
